Project Description

Climate VC – a gigatonne of impact

Climate VC is a specialist climate tech investor focused on finding and backing climate change start-ups that might have been overlooked by other VCs throughout the UK.

Climate VC wants to disrupt the traditional VC approach to climate innovation by putting as much emphasis on the climate impact of a venture as the commercial return.

Raising funds from individual and institutional UK-based LPs, Climate VC’s mission is to back 100-120 early-stage UK-based climate start-ups over three years.

The investors aim to see at least 10 of these investments become full-scale successes, each removing 10 megatonnes of CO2e a year for a decade, cumulatively creating a gigatonne impact on the climate change mission by the mid-2030s.

Our Approach

Seven was tasked with launching the new fund to develop awareness of Climate VC and its investments among journalists and external stakeholders such as fintech and environmental influencers.

Working with the Climate VC team, we developed messaging that differentiated its approach from other VCs in the sustainability and net zero space. We built the narrative around founder Peet Denny’s thought leadership and the diversity of the investees that the fund backed at launch.

We developed a phased approach to create multiple news moments, first announcing the launch of the fund while profiling two key investments, Tierra Foods, an agroforestry pioneer scaling production of ancient ingredients while protecting and expanding rainforests, and Global OTEC, a base-load source of renewable electricity for small island nations.

We followed shortly with a second release profiling three other investments Offgrid.Finance, a fintech matching SMEs in emerging markets with green capital providers, Treeconomy, connecting rural landowners directly to the global carbon offset market, and Deep.Meta, creating accurate digital twins in steel production where currently a quarter is defective and wasted. We secured a number of longer lead podcast and op-ed opportunities for Climate VC and its investees, to ensure a long tail for the announcement moment.

In addition, we provided value-add comms support and advice for the investee teams, including supporting the drafting applications to the Earthshot Prize and prepping founders for roundtables and conference events.

The Results

Across the launch campaign, we secured 115 pieces of coverage in key VC and investor media, sustainability press and technology publications, including Impact Alpha, UKTN, Startups Magazine, EU-Startups, Angel News, Maddyness and Growth Business.

Climate VC founder, Peet Denny, was interviewed on the Superpowers for Good podcast and Impact Boom podcast and an op-ed secured on Conviction News.

In addition, the founders of agroforestry innovator Tierra Foods were interviewed on Impact Hustlers podcast.

Thanks to the coverage from launch, the profile of Climate VC and Peet Denny increased and helped to grow a network of interested investors for future rounds and established Climate VC as a mission-driven investor making a tangible climate impact.

The investee comms support was received very well by founders. Thanks to Seven’s knowledge of start-ups, the innovation landscape and the sustainability agenda, we have been approached to provide further comms support and advice by founders following the campaign.
